Structural Design of Base Isolated 15-story Malatya Hospital

Seismic isolation technique are beneficial to reduce floor accelerations and relative floor displacements by reducing spectral accelerations and providing rigid-body behavior of the superstructure. However, the type of base isolator should be determined in accordance with structural characteristics of building. The determination of type of base isolators might be more critical issue for high-rise building compared to mid-rise building. This study presents a comparative investigation of the design of a reinforced concrete hospital building with two different type of isolators (Lead Rubber Bearing and Friction Pendulum Isolator). Target building is a 300 bed capacity maternity and pediatric hospital which has planned to be built in Malatya, Turkey. Within the scope of the design, site-specific seismic hazard analysis, seismic isolation system design and superstructure design were carried out. NLTHA (Nonlinear Time History Analysis) were performed considering nonlinear behavior of base isolators. However, the superstructure is assumed to be remain elastic. The building consists a single block with a height of 67 meters and 15 stories and 246 isolators were used in design. For the LRB solution due to the significant differences in axial load levels, the isolators were arranged so that the center of mass and rigidity are collocated based on their resulting horizontal effective stiffness. In addition, it is observed that there is significant difference in inter-story drifts and floor accelerations for LRB and FPS solutions.
